We have been following the modesties from the beginning. What an adventure you have started. Very proud of you guys. I think i would enjoy this trip as you all.Larry,Donna,Linda and I will be in the grand bahama’s in the beginning of march. I wish we could of seen you all , bad timing on our part. Love you guys ,be safe and enjoy a once and a life time experience,
Hello – This is Kennedy’s English class and we are reading a book that takes place on a sailboat crossing the seas. We will be checking in on your progress and wish you well. We have some questions, if you don’t mind:
*what kind of jobs do you have on the boat to keep it clean and running?
*Where are you headed next?
*What made you decide to do this?
The jobs are seemingly endless. The marine environment is a harsh one. Rolling seas, salt, humid air and more salt wreak havok on everything. We must wash the boat after every sail to get some of the salt away so that everything doesn’t rust and not work anymore. We have two diesel engines that must be maintained daily to ensure working order. A diesel generator is used to recharge batteries and run our watermaker. Because the sea is 35,000 parts per million of salt we must filter it down to less than 500 so that we can drink it.
We are headed next to the Virgin Islands and then following the Caribbean island chain East and South.
Why did we do this? The world is spectacular and we wanted to see more of it, immerse are kids in other cultures, have an adventure…mostly to LIVE and experience.
keep the questions coming!
We all think Kennedy should conduct an in person interview with us.
Thanks so much for your answers! We enjoyed your beginning video – What a great adventure! We all decided we would like to go with you!
What are the some dangers you have faced?
Have you seen sharks or whales?
What happens if one of your family members gets sick?
The dangers happen on a daily basis. We spend our time with a 45 pound anchor holding our home to the bottom. Wind shifts or heavy winds can make us drag into shore. As we sail coral heads, floating logs or last shipping containers can create giant hazards. Large seas and heavy winds can make sailing difficult and scary. While the sea is large we are on constant lookout to not be run over by a large cargo ship. We were boarded at 2am by a Austrian man being chased by locals in the Dominican Republic. He was sure that they were coming to kill him.
We have seen many marine animals, Humpback whales, turtles, dolphins, manatees and many sharks. Chase, aged 3, caught his first fish that happened to be a two-foot shark!
Getting sick on board Rivers2Seas can be difficult. If it is seasickness then all we can do is wait for calmer conditions. Lindsey and Brad both are trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) and we have a medical director from Fort Collins, Colorado who can give us advice. We have medicines onboard to take care of most any emergency – enough to fit in two large suitcases.
Thanks for writing back – here are a couple more questions:
How do you have internet to update your blog?
What islands have you been to and which do you think is the best?
What do you miss most about being home?
What do you realize NOW that you can live without?
Hello,
We get internet by harvesting a signal from a hotel or similar from our boat. We can also go ashore and most restaurants have a signal that we can you. Finding a secure signal to do banking or such is difficult though.
The best island so far has been the Dominican Republic. It was the least touristy place, friendliest people and fun experiences.
We miss friends and the simpleness of things at home, like unlimited water and electricity and food stores. Food is twice as expensive here and generally of lesser quality.
We now realize that we can do without the daily dosage of news. It has been 5 months since we actually heard the news and any news we do hear is of little value. I wasted too much time worried about “the news” and not enough living. The news is generally made to seem drastic, depressing and have as much of a negative tint as possible.
Lindsey replied that her morning latte could be done without, although it will be reinstated upon our return. Ella said that a bathtub could be done without and this is something she cherished before. Chase said that there is nothing in Colorado – he wants to stay on the boat FOREVER.
